Chapter 01.5

"That's good to know," Jake uttered, looking down when her hand slipped into his.

"Did you have any more?" Shion asked, wondering if there had been more little ones.

"No, didn't seem right watching my own children grow old and die when I do not at least while... you know," seeing her nod, "although I am taking care of a homeless boy here. Have him a room at the Inn; his meals are paid for. Help him as much as I can when I'm here," Jake said, seeing her eyes widening in surprise at that.

"You're looking after a street urchin?" Shion asked, not to disparage him, just for clarification. "Please, introduce me to him; your charge is my charge," she said, wanting to do something for the child.

"You sure?" Jake asked, knowing elves didn't tend to get into human affairs such as homeless human children.

"Of course, I know you aren't always here, and your visits can't be tracked, sneaky little battlemage," Shion said, flashing him a warm smile. "A young boy needs guidance and a home, and yours isn't suitable for him," she stated, nodding along like a mother. "Worry not, Jake, we'll take good care of him."

"Huh?" Jake mumbled, peering over at her confused. "Who's we?" Not seeing how the others were clued into their conversation by Shion's eailer passionate words.

"Us, of course," Holly chirped. "Jake, you needn't worry; the boy will be well taken care of."

"I'll make sure he's not mistreated," Shion said, reassuring Jake that the boy will be looked after.

"I'll have to speak to him about it," Jake said, noting how Holly noticed how they were holding hands.

"I was wondering when you would make your move, Shion; you've been talking about him since you met him," Holly said, getting chuckles out of her friends, which caused Shion's face to rapidly heat.

"You should have heard her going on about Jake this, Jake that, oh, and we so ragged her for spending the night with a man, not her husband," Mark admitted as he grinned madly at Shion. He knew with him and Holly getting together and Marda and Bard going strong Shion was bound to feel lonely and left out. That wasn't something he wanted for his dear friend.

"You should have heard the things she said when she experienced my elven bath, so unbecoming of an elf," Jake replied as he joined in. He wasn't expecting Holly to spin around as fast as she did.

"You. Have. A. Elven. Bath?!" Holly uttered every word in increasing pitch.

"Yeah, don't you?"

"No!" Holly screeched.

"You couldn't build one for them?" Jake asked, looking over at Shion.

"Jake, I'm a rouge not a mason, nor do I have the knowledge of how the baths were made. I'm not fortunate enough like you to learn that secret of our people," Shion said, holding her head high.

"Just who are you?!" Holly asked, looking at Jake in awe.

"Me? I'm just a nobody," Jake said, shrugging his shoulders.

"Jake, you aren't just a nobody. You got elven knowledge that Shion doesn't have," Bard countered before asking how her new weapon handled.

"We'll head home, you bring him with you," Holly said, taking charge as Mark nodded in agreement.

"You don't have to worry about a thing. We'll make sure he is looked after," Mark promised before they parted.

"Now show me to this boy, and what's his name?" Shion spoke, squaring her shoulders, preparing herself to take on the mantle of motherhood. "So what you said about coming to this world from another was true?"

"It was," Jake nodded.

"And what were you on that world?" Shion asked, eager to know everything about him.

"I used to sling Udon for a living; it's a noodle used in soups," Jake explained, seeing the confusion on her face.

"In this place called... Japan... did I say that right?" Shion asked, breathing out a breath of relief when Jake nodded. She didn't want to disrespect his home. "Was your family there?"

"No, my family abandoned me; my mother never wanted me; my father left me in Japan with his then-wife. I never saw either one of them ever again. So when I was ten years old I was all on my own, like Adam has been. That's his name, by the way," Jake said, seeing how she was listening to every word he spoke.

"Your own parents just left you?" Shion uttered in disgust. Amongst her people, even the High Elves, if a parent didn't want a child, they would at least make sure the child had someone to care for them.

"Yeah, people from my world weren't too into family unity than instant gratification. Although I can't say that about the Japanese people, they were more family-oriented than where I came from on that world. But meh, doesn't matter anymore seriously doubt I could go back if I wanted to. I think my arrival here is a one-way trip. Even if I wanted to go back. There's nothing left there for me to go back to. If time moves the same here as it does there, two hundred years have passed on my Homeworld. I don't think it would go well for me there if I did return."

"Why?"

"Humans on my world live just as long as humans here, and there are no other races. So if they realized I'm a two-hundred-year-old man, they would lock me up and experiment on me just to learn my secret," Jake said, seeing the horror on her face.

"Are your people barbarians?!"

"No, but sometimes I wonder," Jake responded as they stepped onto the small porch of the Inn before he opened the door. "Hello, Mrs. Matty. Is Adam in his room?"

"Yes, sir, he's currently working on his school work like you wanted him to after getting a bath after returning," Mrs. Matty said; the coins he normally paid her lined her hand before he and Shion headed for Adam's room.

"Adam," lightly knocking on the door, "it's me, Jacob," he said through the door. It wasn't even five seconds before his door flew open, and Adam wrapped him in a hug to say hello.

Shion's fingers lightly pressed on her lips at the sight before her. She wondered what the boy had gone through to latch onto Jake like he was doing. Her heart did warm when she saw the happy smile on Adam's face at that warm embrace Jake was giving him.

"Adam, this is Shion," Jake said, introducing the two of them.

"I've seen you; you're an adventurer," Adam said in awe.

"That I am, but I'm also betrothed to Jacob," Shion said, grinning at Jake, who had a look that said, 'Did you have to?!'

"Let's go into your room, Adam," Jake said, steering the boy back into his room, who had a wide grin on his face at the fact he knew that word. He watched as Shion took hold of Adam's hand and led him to his bed. Jake noted Adam's school work scattered across the old table that was in the room.

"Adam, how are you here?" Shion asked, sitting down beside Adam on his bed. "It's okay, you don't have to be nervous."

"I'm fine," Adam said, his eyes flickering over to Jake, wondering why the pretty elven lady was asking him such things.

"Adam, I know you probably want a real home, somewhere you can rest your head and know your belongings aren't going to be stolen," Shion said, seeing the conformation in Adam's eyes. "I was talking to Jake about you," seeing his eyebrows raised at that, "and since he will be my husband in a few years. When he told me about you, I knew I just had to meet you," she stated with a warm, friendly smile. "I know Jake's home isn't suitable for children; yes, I've been there. I don't think you would sleep well with all those undead there." Shion fought herself from not chuckling at how rapid Adam's nod was. "So I was thinking since Jake's comings and goings from the town are erratic for my tastes when a child is involved. That you come and live with me and my friends. We have a home on the south side of town. We have plenty of room for you, and you'll have plenty of food."

"Sir, are you getting rid of me?" Adam asked fearfully.

"What? No. Never, we just thought you might like living in a home and not in an Inn. But you will be responsible for chores and whatnot. However, you won't be alone anymore. If this is something you want to do," Jake said, relieving the boy's fears of being abandoned again.

"But I don't want to go if you're not going to see me," Adam cried as he raced to him and tightly hugged him. "Please don't send me away!"

"Adam, I never said I was going to do that. We just think this will give you more stability than you have now. I'm always going to look after you. That's never going to change unless you want it to, Adam," Jake said firmly, banishing Adam's fears. He knew what that feeling felt like he wasn't about to let Adam think that.

"You mean it?!" Adam asked, looking up at him with tear-laden eyes.

"Of course I do, Adam," Jake said in all seriousness. "So what do you think?"

"What would I be doing?" Adam asked, moving to stand beside Jake.

"Keeping the house clean, laundry, no cooking, running errands for us. Think you can handle all of that?" Shion asked, getting a nod out of Adam. "Then let's pack up your belongs and get you settled in your new home, okay?" With that, they helped Adam carefully pack up his belongings and his schoolwork.

"You leaving?!" Mrs. Matty asked, surprised. Hoping she hid her worry about losing a steady paying customer.

"We are; thank you for looking after Adam while I wasn't in town," Jake said, thanking the woman for what she's done for Adam.

"I don't mind helping Adam one bit. He's a good boy, just dealt the wrong hand," Mrs. Matty said sadly. "You come back if you ever need lunch, and I'll get you fed, hear?"

"Yes, ma'am," Adam answered politely with an innocent smile.

"Jacob," drawing his gaze down to him as they walked towards the south end of the town, "when you two get married, can I call you father?" Adam asked, seeing Jake as such.

"Yeah, you can do it now if you want, but you don't have to since I'm not really..."

"You are!" Adam shouted, his hand latching onto Jake's with a deathly grip, thinking Jake would just disappear like his own parents had done, leaving him homeless and afraid.

Jake didn't say a word; Adam's declaration was poignant enough that he could add nothing to it without taking away from his words. So he just walked down the road; the sun shined down on the three of them as Jake saw the sheer happiness on Adam's face just spending time with him.

"We're going to have to do something with your hair. It's getting rather long. Would you like it if I gave you a trim when we get to your new home?" Shion asked; she knew Adam was trying to imitate Jake, at least with his hair. She didn't sense any magic within him. Which isn't rare for a human boy. She just knew half the jobs that require some form of it would be out of reach for him when he grew up.

"No, thank you. Maybe if it gets too long," Adam said after a few moments.

Shion just shot Jake a look, who just looked away. Pleased to know Jake could be a kind father figure. She was looking forward to the future; unlike humans, elves take their time to have children since they lived for a very long time. Still, she wouldn't mind having a child of her own. She knew Adam would be a part of their lives, and she was going to make sure he was cared for when she wasn't off on a quest.

The house rose as they drew near the robin blue paint shone in the light. Its white shutters were open to allow the sweet breeze through the windows. Shion's voice was soft as she pointed out what responsibilities Adam would have outside, seeing Adam paying very close attention to everything she had said. When Jake asked if he could handle it Adam nodded vehemently that he could. He wasn't going to disappoint Jake. Holly and Mark exited their home when they saw them approaching their home.

"Hello there, I'm Holly," she said, smiling down at the boy. "I hear you'll be living with us from now on; isn't that exciting?" She saw how Adam looked up at Jake, who nodded.

"Yes, I'm Adam," he said, introducing himself like Jake had shown him to. Unless anyone was from a noble or royal family no one had surnames on Yardrat.

"And I'm Mark," he greeted, shaking Adam's hand. "How about we head inside, and we'll show you to your new room." With that, the five of them headed in; Marda was sitting cross-legged in one of the larger rooms that was made to accommodate her large size with Bard sitting on her left thigh as they chatted away.

Adam just stared wide-eyed at the largest person he'd ever seen before. However, Marda's kind smile put him at ease. Bard slid off her thigh to greet the boy. Who introduced himself and brought Adam over to greet Marda. Who carefully picked Adam up and allowed him to stand on the palm of her hand so the two of them could speak at eye level. Marda's lips curled into a smile at how unsteady Adam was on the palm of her hand as he used her fingers to steady himself. Marda told Adam if there was anyone abusing him to find her, and she would take care of the fiends and that he would be protected there in their home. Jake followed Shion as she led him and Adam to the spare room he would be using. Jake looked around the bare room, noting it was about the same size as the room at the Inn, except there was a fireplace in it, unlike Adam's room at the Inn.

"So, do you think you would like it here?" Shion asked, hoping they weren't overloading the boy. A smile formed on her lips as Adam stepped into the room, poking his nose into everything he could, given how spartan the room was at the moment. "We'll go get you a new bed and some items so you can store all the clothes you'll be getting." She couldn't help herself as her smile grew bigger as; Adam's eyes just widened in happiness. "Also, when you aren't doing chores, you will be continuing your schooling," she stated, with Jake nodding along.

"Of course, father, doesn't want me to be a... moron, did I say it right?" Adam asked, using another word that wasn't native to Yardrat.

"You did," Jake agreed as he and Adam put away his things or what they could with the limited furnishings that were in the room. "I'll go to the market and get the items he needs. Adam behave for Shion while I'm gone, alright?"

"Yes, father," Adam said with a firm nod.

"Jake, we can help pay for furniture," Shion said, taking hold of his wrist.

"That may be true, but as his guardian, it's my duty to see that he's cared for," Jake said, taking his responsibilities over Adam very seriously. He wasn't about to let anyone else do the things he could do himself for Adam. That was his responsibility as Adam's father.

"Then I won't push," Shion stated, although silently happy to hear the conviction in Jake's voice. "Now, while your father is shopping, let me show you around the house. There are some places you need to stay out of. Not because you can't go into it, however, Mark's spellwork can be dangerous if interrupted, you understand?" she asked, getting a nod out of Adam before showing him the rest of their home.

Eve of the new moon...

"Are you sure this is what you want to do? The Dark Emperor isn't a monster to be taken lightly. Also, just to get that deep into the Forest of Jura isn't an easy task," Marlin warned as the five of them told her about their plans to take on the monster. Jake stood off to the side since he wasn't really a part of their party. He just tagged along when they needed help.

"We know Guild Master, but Jake here has promised to lead us to where it rests," Marda stated, waving over to Jake. "He also has faced it many of times."

"This true?!" Marlin asked in disbelief. She wondered just how strong he was, if he could face off against the beast and come out alive.

"It is," Jake nodded. "It gave me this," revealing the tip of the scar on his right collar bone, "and nearly lost a leg to the monster as well, but I was lucky."

"And you think you six will be able to handle it?" Marlin asked; she wanted to make sure she wasn't sending them to their deaths. She didn't want to lose any one of them. The loss of a Silver-rank team, no matter who it was, was always a deterrent to any Guild. It took years of training and many quests to raise anyone to the Silver rank, much less alone Gold. Hence why, most leaders of guilds tend not to push people into the Gold ranks given the dangers of such quests.

"We will be, I can handle most of the mobs he sends out. Then again, the only reason it isn't dead yet is because it was only me. With them, it'll be a simple task," Jake said, praising the five of them. Seeing Mark and Bard getting a little prideful at his words as their chest puffed out.

"But it still remains if you'll be able to get to where it is without being overrun by the undead," Marlin stated; she did not like the grin on Jake's face.

"Oh, you needed to worry about that; he hates me just as much as I hate him. He'll let me pass just so he can finally kill me," Jake said, seeing the disbelief on Marlin's face.

"And what could you have done to an undead being that it would hate you so much?" Marlin asked, only to stare dumbfoundedly at a dangling finger on a string with a ring on it.

"I raided his wife's tomb to find a weakness against the Death Knight," nodding when she asked if it was a Death Knight and not a Lich they all speculated it was, "and he hates the fact I have something of his wife that he believes I'm defiling it. So this is our free pass, but we will be beset by the undead the moment we enter the old fort," Jake said, returning the finger to its pouch.

"I see. Do you make it a habit of going around pissing off powerful undead monsters?" Marlin asked, stupefied that anyone would use a thing if they weren't completely insane.

"Only the ones that just won't die," Jake joked.

"Well..." Blowing out a breath, "if you all are set on this task, then I'll back it. But you all better come back alive, hear me?!" Marlin spoke sternly.

"Of course, Marlin, we have Jake with us, the slayer of Shiron. We can't lose," Shion stated, seeing the realization of that name dancing across Marlin's eyes.

"Oh, well then, I don't need to worry," Marlin said, getting up from her seat. "I want confirmation of the subjugation. When I have it, we'll talk about your gold plates. I wish you all luck," she stated before heading off to speak with other guild members, namely the greenhorns.

Jake got a little self-conscious when Marda, Bard, Holly, and Mark just looked at him, wondering what kind of status he had given Marlin a rapid change of heart. He wasn't eager to get into all that. He knew that would just create more trouble than he wanted to deal with. He just hoped Marlin kept that tidbit of information to herself.

"Seems we're good to go, Jake; we need to prepare for this fight and the travel to the forest. Bard will secure a wagon for us..."

"Oh, I got the travel handled; all you need to get is potions and whatever else you think you need," Jake said, cutting Marda off. He had come to the realization that he was going to have to tell them about his teleportation spell.

"Jake, what do you mean you have it handled?" Holly asked, confused.

"Just that I do, I'll tell you all more in a private setting, rather not have my privacy aired, you understand, right?" Jake uttered, seeing their questioning looks.

"Very well, Jake, but we deserve to know exactly what you're planning if we're putting our lives in your hands," Marda said, taking on a dry tone.

"Of course, Marda, I would demand the same if I were you," Jake said, seeing the concern in his friend's eyes. "Relax, it's nothing to be worried about," he stated, reassuring them.

"If you say so," Bard replied. "But if you're lying to us, I will be the last thing you see."

"Promise, after this, you all will have fancy gold plates," Jake said, walking off towards their home, where he would wait for them.

"Jake, please don't take what they said too hard; this is a very big deal for us. We've been working so hard for this day," Shion said as she hurried to his side. She trusted him enough to have already gotten the supplies she would need.

"I didn't; I know how getting your first gold plate is," Jake spoke, the dust of the road clouding around his feet with each step.

"I know you do, Jake," Shion said, slipping her hand into his.

"What's the reason informing Marlin who I am?" Jake asked, hoping his quiet life wasn't going to get complicated as it did after the defeat of Shiron.

"To inform Marlin that we can do this, nothing more," Shion answered, sensing he didn't like being known as the Hero of Lingala. "Jake, why don't you like people knowing who you are?"

"Because people have overinflated expectations of me that I have no wish to fulfill. I never wanted to be summoned here. I only wanted a simple, quiet life back on my Homeworld, nevertheless, when I was born in this world. I still just wanted a simple life. Yet that didn't happen, and unlike where I'm from I'm having to put my life at risk constantly just to make decent coin in this world. My life back on Earth might not have been great, it wasn't, but it was never in danger just to make a living," Jake said, not to harp at her, just to tell her how he saw their way of life compared to his former one.

"And now?" Shion asked curiously.

"Well, I don't have to adventure to make a living anymore, if I had to guess, I have enough to live a very comfortable life for a long time," Jake admitted.

"Seriously?!"

"Yeah, I am old, you know," Jake joked; he lost count after he reached fifty million gold coins that were hidden in his home.

"Why haven't you?" Shion asked, peering over at him.

"Boredom mostly," Jake shrugged as they turned onto the road that would lead them to Shion's home.

"Father!" Adam cried out at the sight of Jake as he was doing chores around the yard. His new clothes fitted well to his growing body as he ran towards the two of them. Since he came to live with Shion and the others, they made sure he was cared for. Shion talked to him every night, asking him all sorts of things, something like his mother used to do before his parents abandoned him. "Hello, Ms. Shion. Did you and the others finish with your business at the Guild?" he asked, taking his position as their house boy very seriously.

"We did; we'll be leaving here soon to go on our quest. You'll be in charge of watching over the house while we're away," Shion said sweetly as she and Adam walked into the house, with Jake following after him.

"Where are you going, father?" Adam asked, climbing into the seat beside Jake. Not seeing the smile Shion was flashing him as Adam peered up at Jake.

"The Forest of Jura," Jake said truthfully.

"Why?" Adam asked, shivering.

"To kill the Dark Emperor, do you know what that is?" Shion asked in a motherly voice.

"Mmmhmm," Adam hummed as he nodded. "Do... do you think you can beat him?"

"Alone, no, but I'm not going to be alone this time," Jake said, relieving Adam's fear.

"And when you do beat it, what then?" Adam asked.

"Hmm... don't know, what do you think?" Jake inquired with a mused smile.

Adam didn't or couldn't answer Jake's question as he squeezed Jake's hand tightly, hoping he could make his wish come true. Where he could live with him fully and be a family, unlike the one that threw him away. Someone to love him as their own.

"I'll make sure we bring him back to you," Shion said with conviction.

It was half an hour before the others returned. Loaded down with supplies to face the hordes of undead that roamed the forest. It was only thanks to the Death Knights magic that animated the dead, and it only encompassed the forest. If one of those wandering dead tried to leave, the magic would crumble instantly, leaving their bones strewn along the ground. That's the reason the rest of the region hadn't been overran by the fiends. Jake could see the suspicion on their faces when there wasn't a wagon and horses waiting for them upon their return.

"Okay, Jake, there are no horses, no wagons, no supplies. What are you playing at?" Marda asked heatedly; her warhammer thumped loudly on the floorboards of the room as she and the rest of them waited for answers. "What have you been doing all this time, Shion?"

"If you four will wait before jumping to conclusions that you're obviously wrong about, what you're about to see you must keep to yourself, or Jake will not help us," Shion said, getting to her feet, seeing how Adam was about to jump up and defend Jake. She was proud of him for that, it showed her just how much he cared about Jake.

"Shion, you're walking a fine line here," Marda said defensively, narrowing her eyes at the elf. She wasn't used to this version of her friend, and she couldn't say she liked it.

"Adam, I need you to go to your room and wait there until you don't hear anything anymore," Jake instructed, seeing Adam's protectiveness of him in his eyes when he glanced sideways at Marda and the others. "I promise it will be okay."

"Okay, I believe you," Adam said, wrapping his arms around Jake's neck, holding it a little longer as Jake rubbed his back. "Bye, father, come back soon," he whispered into Jake's ear. His head nodded when Jake placed a few silver coins in Adam's palm, telling him to go get him some sweets and food while they were away. Jake told him that they would only be gone for a day or so, and he reinforced his words that he would return.

"If you speak of what I'm about to show you, that will end our involvement with one another. If my secrets are made to bear, I will kill each and every one of you plain and simple as you are planning on doing this very moment," seeing the worrying looks on their faces, "this is why I work alone," Jake said, casting his hand out towards their fireplace and opened the doorway to his home. "Hurry up and walk through; teleporting this many people is very taxing," he said, nodding towards the doorway.

"I'll wait for you on the other side," Shion said, grabbing her bow and quiver, walking through the doorway, showing her friends it was harmless. "Come on, you four, it's fine."

"Jake... just where..."

"Yeah, I'm not telling you," Jake said at Mark's surprised and shocked face at what he was looking at.
