Chapter 37
Anvita got busy in the kitchen for the next hour. She heard loud laughing from the men as they turned their night on. They began with stories from work and slowly turned to stories that ridiculed the media and then the politicians. Then they discussed billionaires and their lifestyles. Shreyas talked about manners he noticed from influential CEOs he had ever interacted with.
When the fried snacks finished, Atul asked for more. Anvita checked the bowl.
“Oh, you finished it all? You should have told me before it became empty.”
“You don’t have more?” Atul looked at her.
“I will make some more. You’ll have to wait.”
“We’ll wait. It was so delicious.”
Shreyas said.
“You should have told me before it finished, gentlemen.”
Anvita said and picked up the empty bowl.
“I was about to tell you.”
Atul chuckled, “but Shreyas stopped me.”
Anvita turned to Shreyas.
“I told him it’s not good to disturb you; you are already alone and working hard in the kitchen.” He said.
“You are really sympathetic.”
Anvita grinned. “Why don’t you guys consider coming there and helping me? Both of you?”
“We will. We will.”
Atul said.
“But first we will have one more drink.”
Anvita soon prepared another bowl of snacks for them.
“It’s really bad we are having complete fun here, and Anvita is working hard alone in the kitchen. It’s all because of me.”
Shreyas said apologetically. She knew he was teasing her.
“You call this complete fun, huh?”
Anvita hit back at him.
“Not complete, but somewhat.”
“This is complete sans music and dance.”
Atul said.
Anvita giggled without reason.
“No. Don’t do music and dance here.”
“Roger that, madam.”
Shreyas shook his head.
“But how about opening that bottle just for a light drink? I just don’t feel good to see you waiting for your milk time.”
“Come on Shreyas, she’s not as innocent as she pretends to be. I can tell you that.”
Atul said. He turned to Anvita.
“Anvi. Please. You can't make him so miserable. Open that bottle. Join us.”
Anvita hesitated.
“Okay but I am not done the cooking. If I get high you will blame it on me only.”
“No. we will take the blame.”
Atul promised.
Shreyas raised his hand.
“Hey, that’s not right. We won’t allow you to ruin anything. It’s my guarantee. I know you are a great cook. I’ve already tasted yours.”
He blinked at her.
“I mean, your…fried snack is just yummy.”
Anvita was embarrassed. Indeed, you've tasted mine.
“But I can't leave the stove on and keep shuttling between the kitchen and here.”
“Okay, we’ll handle that too.”
Atul said.
“Do you mind if we shift to the kitchen?”
“What!”
Anvita looked at him surprised.
“Mmm….that’s a great idea.” Shreyas obliged.
“Are you guys gone out of your mind?”
“We are trying to help you, Anvita.”
Shreyas said.
“No. I don’t want any party in my kitchen.”
“Kitchen is not only for cooking. There are greater things we can do over there.”
Shreyas said and blinked at her again.
Didn’t he just lick his lips when he said that?
“It will be fun, Anvi.”
Atul assured her. Anvita looked at them amused.
Shreyas rose to his feet.
“Lead the way, dear.”
He insisted.
Anvita walked to the kitchen and the men followed. Atul’s steps were already in shambles.
“Bring a glass for your lovely wife, Atul. I will fix the drink for her.”
Shreyas said as he sat at the breakfast table. Atul stumbled toward the shelf and fetched a glass. Anvita feared it would fall off his hand. She held him and got the glass in her hand.
“How much you’ve drunk, baby?”
She asked in a low voice.
“No. I am okay.”
He slurred.
“Slow down.”
Anvita warned him quietly.
Shreyas fixed her vodka and raised it toward her.
“For you, for being a wonderful host. For…”
Anvita took the glass in hand quickly.
“Shut up and cheers!”
Atul laughed. Anvita was sure he was a goner. She eyed at him to slow down whenever he brought his glass to his lips– in vain. He winked at her every time and went on to finish his drink quicker among the three.
“He is alright, Anvita. Don’t worry. It’s not the first time he’s drinking. He’s not gonna pass out. I can assure you that.”
Shreyas assured her.
“You better be sure about yourself, gentleman. You two are going too fast. You combined have almost finished the bottle. I never knew Atul was...”
She paused and limited her words in a gesture.
“The objective is not about finishing the bottle, Anvita. It’s about having fun. When we finish this one, I’ve got another in my car.”
Shreyas said.
“That’s great, Shreyas.”
Atul beamed. “I was worried about what would we do now. I have something but I hate mixing. It’s injurious.”
Anvita gave Shreyas a stern look.
“I am telling you, don’t bring it. I have cooked a lot of food for you. If any of it goes to waste, you mark my word, I am gonna kill you.”
She warned.
“Oh really? Tell me how exactly you are gonna kill me?”
Shreyas teased her.
“You know, I haven’t been killed recently.”
Atul laughed, “I have a feeling that I will be killed in my bed tonight. Choose your death place yourself, Shreyas.”
“I am fine here, in this lovely kitchen,” Shreyas said. “ There is a lot of space here to go for the kill and be killed. I will die a happy man in your hands, Anvita.”
“Stop making fun of my threatening. I mean it.”
Anvita said sternly, concentrating on the cooking.
“I have taken your words seriously. Believe me; I am just waiting to be killed by your beautiful hands and what.”
Anvita picked up a knife.
“This is what I am going to wield in my beautiful hands.”
“As you wish!”
Shreyas said and did a high-five with Atul.
The bottle was finished soon.
“Let me bring the bottle.”
Shreyas got up.
“No,” Atul stopped him. “You are my guest, Shreyas. Give me the car key, I’ll bring it.”
“I suggest you both sit here now. You both have gone beyond the limit.”
Anvita warned.
Nobody felt compelled to follow her.
“It’s okay, Anvi. We’ll just do the bottom. That’s all.”
Shreyas said when Atul went out.
Anvita turned back.
“What are you really doing Shreyas?”
“What am I doing? I am partying.”
“No. your words. You are speaking with a new language.”
“What did I say?”
“Don’t you remember?”
He stared at her from head to toe, slowly and then brought back his eyes to lock it with her eyes.
“No. I don’t remember.”
Anvita had a hard time facing his eyes. She slowly turned her back to him, toward the stove.
“You look wonderful, Anvi.”
Shreyas said.
“You have said that already.”
“No verbal compliment can do justice to your beauty.”
“Oh really? Then what alternate options do you have?”
“I have thought of one.”
“mmm…hmmm?”
Anvita turned her head and stole a quick look at him over her shoulder.
“But not now. later.”
“Later when?”
“Can't you wait?”
“Wait for what? I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Shreyas giggled.
“I believed you.”
Anvita turned to him. She said nothing; just smiling.
“Which floor is this?”
He asked.
“Fourth.”
“Mmm… that means Atul will take time to come back, right?”
“So?”
“So, nothing.”
“You have something in your mind.”
“I have a lot in my mind.”
“About me.”
“About you.”
“What is it?”
“Do you wanna know?”
“Only decent things.”
“Decent things!”
He laughed, “I’ve never thought indecently about you, ever.”
“Are you sure of that?”
“Absolutely.”
“I don’t remember so.”
“What do you remember?”
“It was quite indecent…”
“I don’t think like that.”
“Why?”
“Because I can see right now you are smiling.”
“So?”
“So you are lying.”
“Why should I lie?”
“Because you are afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of your feelings.”
Anvita’s smile faded slowly.
“That’s a damn stupidity.” She said.
“I am speaking my mind.”Shreyas claimed.
Anvita slowly shook her head sideways. “You are trying to go back.”
“Yes. It’s worth it. Those were wonderful moments. You and I. So close. Just a few inches away. I still cherish those moments and dream about you.”
Anvita walked over to him and put her empty glass on the table.
“This is very sour. I don’t know why it is so special.”
She poured vodka and added soda.
Shreyas got to his feet and took green chilli and lemon from her vegetable basket. He squeezed in a few drops juice from the cut lemon to the drink and then stirred it with a slice of green chilli. Anvita watched on, amused.
“Now.”
Shreyas handed her the glass when he was done.
“Try it now.”
Anvita took a sip.
“Mmm… wow!”
She took another sip and put it down.
“It’s good now.”
Shreyas sat down and grabbed her right hand and kissed on the back of her palm. His eyes were locked into hers.
Anvita slowly pulled her hand back.
“You’ll hurt yourself. I have handled a lot of spice with my hand.”
Her voice was low.
“I am glad there are no other reasons.”
“There are other reasons too.”
Anvita grinned, “You’ll be hurt when I slap you.”
“I am ready to bear it.”
He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips again. Anvita pushed him and moved away.
“Stop pursuing your colleague’s wife!”
She protested and turned on her heel to go back to cooking. Shreyas walked over to her and stood beside her, leaning his back on the countertop.
“Anvi, do you remember me when I am not around?”
“Why don’t we speak something else?”
“Tell me, Anvi.”
“Why do you wanna know that?”
“I keep thinking of you all the time. Even in the day time.”
Anvita smirked.
“And in the night time?”
“In the night, you come in my dreams.”
Anvita giggled, “What do I do in your dreams?”
“You do everything I can only dream.”
Anvita felt he was a lover.
“Romance doesn’t suit your personality, gentleman. It’s past your age.”
She teased.
“I thought the same until I saw you, Anvi.”
“Stop it, okay?”
Her tone made it too obvious that she did not mean it.
“When we are going to see again?”
He asked.
“Finish this one first, peacefully”
“I am talking about you and me.”
“That’s not happening any soon.”
“I won’t be a burden. I can assure you.”
“I don’t need any assurance.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“You are asking a lot already.”
“Do you like to be with me? I mean, like this, having a drink, or a coffee or a lunch, or just sitting at a table, talking with each other?”
Before she could answer him, they heard the front door opening. Shreyas quickly moved away and went back to his chair. Atul walked in with the bottle and opened it hurriedly.
“Shreyas has promised me this will be the last one.”
Anvita reminded him.
“When did I say that?”
Shreyas threw a surprised look at her. Atul laughed.
“He must have meant the whole bottle.”
“You got me, man.”
Shreyas laughed.
Anvita had finished most of the cooking. She left the dish on simmer and sat between the men.
“What is this?”
Atul noticed her drink.
“This is what Shreyas has made for me. It’s really good.”
“I have only good things for Anvita.”
Shreyas said. Anvita threw a suspicious gaze at him. Atul took a sip of the drink.
“It feels like plain water. “
He took another sip.
“It’s very smooth, indeed.”
He said.
“Anvita said she like it smooth.”
Anvita struggled hard not to smirk at Shreyas's sly remark.
Atul put the glass down, empty.
“Wow!”
Shreyas quickly fixed another drink.
When Atul went to the washroom, Anvita warned Shreyas.
“Watch your words, gentleman. What is this smoothness and hardness you are talking about? You are ruining the party.”
“Am I ruining it, really?”
He placed his hand on her.
“I am having a great time with you.”
Anvita pushed his drink forward.
“You better finish this and get drunk and pass out. Please do it.”
“I will do that. But promise me you will take advantage of me.”
Anvita laughed.
“That’s the lamest joke I’ve ever heard.”
“It’s okay. You have laughed.”
“I am laughing at it.”
He touched her face and ran his fingers down her cheek.
“What is this? What are you doing?”
She gave him a strange look.
“I am checking if you are real.”
Anvita giggled.
“You are out of your mind. You are too drunk. You’ll have to hire a cab to go home.”
Anvita got up and went for Atul.
He was lying in the bed, face down.
“Oh my! Atul! Atul!”
Anvita rolled him on the bed and shook his body. He had slept passed out.
“Oh shit! Is this you?”
She shook him harder and it got her no response. Atul was beyond waking up.
“Leave him, Anvi.”
She heard a voice. Shreyas was right behind her.
“Give him some time. He’ll be alright. We’ll wake him up.”
He said.
“No, you don’t know him. He’ll wake up in the morning now.”
Anvita said bitterly.
Shreyas studied her for a moment.
“Are you sure of that?”
Anvita sat beside Atul and stared back at Shreyas.
“Why?”
Shreyas put his knee on the edge of the bed and leaned forward. He grabbed Atul’s arm and shook him.
“Atul… Are you there?”
Atul did not respond. Anvita looked on.
“What did you think I was doing?”
Shreyas moved further forward and shook him again.
“Atul… are you there? I am going to kiss your wife. Are you listening?”
Anvita looked at him in disbelief.
“Wha…”
She could not speak, as his lips pressed into her. She moved back in a reflex and fell on her back on the bed. Shreyas smiled fondly at her and bent to kiss her again. Their lips met, this time for an intense kiss that Anvita felt sucked the soul out of her. She melted and held onto him with her right hand. She was still holding Atul’s hand with her left, and as the kiss progressed further, and as Shreyas pinned her firmly under him, she felt his hardness pressing between her spread legs, and she let go of Atul’s hand.
When the fried snacks finished, Atul asked for more. Anvita checked the bowl.
“Oh, you finished it all? You should have told me before it became empty.”
