Chapter 02.1

After lunch, now, it was the time for dessert. All the family members made a queue near the buffet table. A variety of sweets including chocolates and ice cream were spread on the table with disposable cups and spoons. Bipin and Mihir were busy serving the dessert to all.

Then, the family members heard the voice of the head of the Mukherjee clan, Arnab Mukherjee, "Dear all our family members, please make yourself a circle during taking your dessert as there are some important talks."

All the family members pulled their chairs to the center of the hall and made a circle. Two chairs were placed in the middle for two heads of the family. Both the heads were sitting on the chairs.

Arnab Mukherjee said, "Now, I request my dear friend, Bhaskar to start the talk."

All the family members were very much anxious and excited about this unexpected topic which had never happened in any of the previous family gatherings.

Bhaskar glanced towards the anxious faces of members of two families, and then he started his speech, "Both me and my dear friend Arnab are lucky that the Almighty has given us everything. We both are prosperous and rich, blessed with two able wives who have been accompanying with us in our journey of life till date, we are blessed with two competent sons and daughters-in-law, two intellectual daughters, and lastly two pretty granddaughters."

Arnab chuckled amid the speech, and said, "Bhaskar, luckily we got married at a very young age and made our sons get married early otherwise we wouldn't have such two beautiful granddaughters."

Bipasha and Arpita giggled, and all other members smiled gracefully towards both the heads of the family.

Bhaskar continued his speech, "You all only know that Arnab and I are friends and that's the reason why our two families are bound together. You all might have noticed that there are 100% similarities between these two families in respect of house, way of life, upbringings of sons, daughters and our granddaughters. We both friends have tried to make no differences between the two families. But why? You all should know the past background of certain facts which have united these two families. My father's name was Ardhendu Chatterjee and the name of Arnab's father was Abhijit Mukherjee. Both of our late fathers, Ardhendu and Abhijit belonged to a rural area of Nadia District of West Bengal in the British era. Both their families were neighbors, and our fathers were very close friends from their childhood. As per the tradition, both of them had an early marriage in their twenties on the same day, and first I was born, then after three days Arnab was born, it was in 1940 when India was under the British regime.

Although they were fathers of new-born babies, the parents of our fathers sent them to Calcutta, recently the name of which has been changed into 'Kolkata' for higher studies. During their studies in Calcutta, both the duo was heavily inspired by Gandhiji who was leading the independence movement for India. Instead of studies, both of them were involved in the Independence movement of India. It was the year 1942. Gandhiji started the 'Quit India Movement' and decided to launch a mass civil disobedience movement 'Do or Die' call to force the British to leave India. The Quit India movement was violently suppressed by the British - people were shot, lathi-charged, villages burnt and enormous fines imposed. In the five months up to December 1942, an estimated 60,000 people had been thrown in jail."

Bhaskar paused for a moment, then resumed his speech, "In Calcutta, there was a British Law Authority officer who was also police chief, and his name was William Clayton. There was a massive agitation in Calcutta at that time where our fathers also participated. To suppress the agitators, this British officer ordered the force to shoot to disperse the crowd. As a result,5 Agitators were shot dead on the spot, and our fathers had witnessed all the incidents before their eyes. Our fathers were so shocked by the incident that they wanted to take revenge. After proper planning, they arranged hand bombs and waited for the opportunity to kill that British officer, and regularly following him. After someday in the morning, the duo found William Clayton who was having his morning walk in Maidan (It is the largest urban park in Kolkata now, it is a vast stretch of the field that includes numerous playgrounds, including the famous cricketing venue Eden Gardens). The Duo threw bombs at him, and William Clayton died at the spot. The Duo left Calcutta immediately.

It was a sensational event at that time, the news was printed in the highlight in all leading newspapers, and there was a red high alert for our fathers. Their photos were sent everywhere, and the British force started searching operations in every corner, in every part of West Bengal to nab them. There was even an award for them. The Duo ran for their lives, they were hiding and taking shelter in the houses of sympathizers in the daytime as most of the Indians were sympathizers. They would move in at night. Both of them were well aware of the fact that once they were caught means they would be hanged. After running for a week, they reached a place named Murguma near Purulia (Purulia, now, a district town of West Bengal) to one of their known persons."

Bhaskar thought for a moment as if to go back past to recollect his memory, "The well-wisher sheltered them. In the night, the person who sheltered them informed them that the heat was still on them as British police were chasing everywhere for their lookout, and they should leave the place immediately as it was not safe for them as any locals could inform the police after seeing them. After much discussion, their friend suggested one thing. There were a dense forest and hills on the bank of Kangsabati River, just 20 miles away from the place. He suggested they escape into the jungle as nobody had dared to step inside that jungle because the jungle was full of wild animals including Royal Bengal tigers and Leopards. Even the public had the notion that some tribes were living in that jungle who were cannibals and would kill outsiders and not a single person had returned from the jungle alive. Both the friends decided to escape into the jungle rather hanged by the British. The well-wisher provided them sufficient food, water, two hunter knives, and two daggers. Both the friends reached the deep core of the dense forest by midnight and encountered a lot of wild animals on their way. To escape from wild animals, both of them climbed up on a big tree and sheltered in a safe branch quite height from the ground. But throughout the night, the two friends could not sleep as they could hear the roaring of tigers under the tree, both of them were very afraid but managed to sleep few hours."

Bhaskar stopped for a moment and glanced towards the family members. Everybody was silent and listening to him as if they were hypnotized. He indicated Bipin for a glass of water. Bipin rushed with a glass of water to him. After drinking some water, he looked at two girls.

"Grand paa, why did you stop?" asked Arpita in an anxious voice.

Bhaskar smiled, and said, "Ohhh, my little darling, have patience, I am continuing. So, the next morning, two friends climbed down the tree, it was daylight, and they started exploring the area. Then they could hear the ripples of a river nearby, they found the Kangsabati River which was flowing nearby. Above the bank of the river, it was a dense forest, it was so dense that both could see the only deep shadow of darkness from distance. Suddenly they heard a human scream coming out from that side of the jungle. Both of them rushed immediately towards that side. Behold a terrifying scene! They could see a black naked woman with a child supporting a trunk of a tree with terrified eyes and screaming frantically for their lives. Then they could see a huge wild beast in reddish-yellow colored skin with black stripes in its body, with huge paws, wagging its big tail, approximately 100 meters away from the woman and child was proceeding towards them. Ohhh...my God, it was a huge royal Bengal tiger, slowly proceeding towards them just like a cat towards mice.

The wild beast stopped few yards from its prey, ready to charge and pounce. The two friends ran towards the tiger. The wild beast heard the footsteps of the friends and turned its head towards the backside and saw our fathers. Without wasting time, the two friends pelted stones towards the beast to divert its attention from its prey. The stones hit it, and the tiger made a deafening and heart-throbbing roar and charged towards them at a lightning speed. Both the friends were ready for this, they stroke their daggers aiming at its head and the beast was severely wounded. They rushed immediately towards the beast where it was lying wounded, and without giving it any scope to retaliate, both the friends started striking their daggers continuously and the huge beast breathed its last. When they confirmed that it was dead, they returned near to the woman and child who were still frightened as if death was near to them.

The woman mumbled something in her dialect which the friends couldn't understand. After some moments, around 20-25 black naked persons both males and females holding twigs in the form of sticks climbed down from the nearest trees with the help of hanging vines. With their fearful eyes, they were staring at the dead tiger, and at the same time, they were staring at our fathers who were holding blood-stained daggers. With cautious distance, suddenly all the black people lay on their stomach, raised their hands before our fathers, and shouted in a loud voice, "Masombango Gazoo... Masombango Gazoo." (Later on, our fathers revealed to us the literal meaning of the words which were messengers of Deity Masambango in human forms. Their Deity was Masombango, and the tribes thought that our fathers were messengers of their deity, their protector, and had arrived there to save them from adversity). The two friends couldn't understand their dialects but communicate with them through gestures. They accompanied our fathers to little distance with dignity as if they were demi-gods, then some other groups from tree climbed down and joined them. Then the tribes located a herd of deer, they didn't have any sharp weapons except the twigs and sharpened rough stones. The group targeted a particular big male deer and encircled it slowly and carefully. When the deer got a hint of being encircled by them, it started running but they encircled it, started pelting stones at it, beating it with their twigs, ultimately, they killed it.

Now, it was time for a feast to honor their demigods. The two friends were observing everything keenly and came to know that the tribes knew the use of fire as they struck two small rocks in dry grass and leaves, it might be flint, ignited the fire, later on, they put more dry logs to continue the flames of fire. They skinned the deer and put the deer on fire to roast it. They served various wild sweet fruits, berries, and roasted meat of deer before our fathers. It was a sumptuous lunch for our fathers, and in the evening, they took our fathers above trees, the two friends climbed up the trees through the hanging vines and found small huts built above the trees, the roof being built by palm leaves, and the surface being built by joining small branches of the tree together, tied tightly and secured by wild vines. The bed was made of a heap of smooth wild grasses just like a mattress. That was the first night of our fathers with the tribes, and they slept peacefully on the tree." Bhaskar stopped for a moment.

Everyone looked anxiously to him to continue the story. Bipasha said, "Grand paa, why don't you continue the story?"

"Listen, dear Bipasha, if I continue the detailed story what our fathers have narrated to us, it will take a whole night to finish it. So, I am not going into details and making it abridged. So, our fathers named the tribe as 'Masombango Tribe' named after their deity aka 'Tree Tribe'. With the help of their hunter knives, our fathers prepared wooden spears, and wooden arrows from the twigs and they also prepared bows. Then they trained the tribes how to throw sharpened spears and usages of bow and arrow for easy hunting of eatable animals and protecting themselves from wild animals. Gradually our fathers learned their language for communication. Our fathers also taught them another method of igniting a fire which was the hand drill method (The hand drill method is characterized by the use of a thin, straightened wooden shaft or reed to be spun with the hands, grinding within a notch against the soft wooden base of a fireboard, a wooden board with a carved notch in which to catch heated wood fibers created by friction). A year had already passed, and our fathers would often visit the town to their mutual friend and well-wisher in the night to ascertain the current news prevailing in the state. Both of them were still on the hit list of Britishers. At that time plenty of scrap irons were lying in the outskirts of town.

While returning to the jungle, the two friends would often collect these scraps. Often, they would lead the tribes to collect these scrap irons from the outskirt of town in the darkness of night. Later on, our fathers melted these scrap irons and trained the tribes for the usage of iron for making sharp weapons like arrows, spears, knives for hunting purposes as well as for their self-defense and protection from wild animals. Later on, they trained the tribes for the usage of iron for plowing and agriculture purposes. Now, the tribes considered the two friends as members of their tribes, our fathers were two Messiahs for them. Our fathers also visited the deity 'Masombango' who was worshipped by the tribes in a cave. The image of the deity was in the form of a hard black natural stone. The top was a round stone symbolizing head. From there two inclined stones in the size of hands were vertically downwards, symbolizing two hands, then from the lower side, there were other two-leg sized stones vertically downwards, symbolizing two legs of the deity. It was not a man-made stone rather a single big black stone made naturally. They were informed by the tribes that the deity had been worshipped from the ages by their forefathers. After visiting the deity, the two friends felt something spirituality, the omnipresence of the deity, the direct blessings of the deity for their survival," Bhaskar halted for a moment, then took a little quantity of water from the glass.

He resumed his speech, "Gradually the two friends started feeling something supernatural and sacred within themselves, and from that day, both of them started worshipping the deity with tribes. While exploring the jungle, the duo found an abandoned two-story Bungalow, near the bank of the Kangsabati River. It had a total of 8 nos of Rooms with kitchen room, two bathrooms separately with an underground water tank. But the bungalow was in dilapidated conditions, full of shrubs and grasses, even small trees were coming up inside the building. They could see a tigress and its cubs made it their abode. They could realize that it was made for the wild game, amusement, sport, merriment purposes for some Maharaja (Indian Prince) but during the course of times, it was abandoned. They guessed it might be more than 20-30 years, no human beings had stepped therein. Two years had already passed. Our fathers persuaded the tree tribespeople to settle on the ground, to which all of them agreed.

Our fathers choose the place near that abandoned bungalow near the river. They trained the tribes to build their huts in clay and stones, trained them for the cultivation of rice and pulses, cooking in clay utensils. They tamed the wild cattle for their domestic uses. They cleaned the abandoned bungalow where our fathers stayed. Slowly the tree tribes learned from our fathers the art of cultivation, plowing, ironsmith works, carpentry works, weaver, extracting oil, pottery, and other works. Our fathers taught them to extract Ghee (Ghee is a hard fat that is obtained by heating butter made from the milk of a cow or a buffalo) and Animal fat for light in a lamp (mud lamp). Except for lightning and flame of fire, the tribes had never experienced light. With the ghee and animal fat, Inside the hut, they used the mud lamp, and outside they started using Mashal (A torch, which is a long stick with burning material at one end, used to provide light or to set things on fire). The tribes started enjoying their lives by agriculture and hunting with the guidance of our fathers. In the meantime, our fathers got information from their mutual friend that their wives were dead due to cholera. I and Arnab, remember our mothers but don't remember the death of our mothers as we both were small kids at that time."

The family members noticed the tears in the eyes of Bhaskar.

He wiped his tears, "After the death of our mothers, we both were brought up by our grandparents in the village. We both had also no memory of our fathers till they picked up us from the village when we both were 8 years old. In the jungle, both the friends were very much grief-stricken after hearing the death news of their wives. Ultimately, they devoted themselves to the development and betterment of Tree tribes. In the year1947, India got freedom, and became a free nation, the Britishers left India forever. The criminal case registered by the British against our fathers was withdrawn by the Government of India, and suddenly the duo became famous as national heroes and freedom fighters. Both of them were praised and were awarded gold medals for their contribution to the nation and gifted two plots in Calcutta where now our houses have been built. Our fathers picked up me and Arnab from the village to Calcutta for our better education, both the friends didn't remarry again rather they devoted themselves to the education of me and Arnab. They built their houses here, of course, Arnab and myself have renovated the houses, and made them into two-story buildings in an identical manner.

Let me continue about our fathers. Till such time, nobody was aware of the existence of such tribes in dense jungle, but our fathers brought forward the facts of the existence of Tree tribes before the nation. A lot of researchers and newsmen started taking interviews with our fathers. Another important thing is to be noted here that before they depart from the tribes, the tribes made our fathers promise and vow before deity that once in a year during their annual festival when deity Masombango will be worshipped publicly by the tribes, our fathers must be present and stay with them for a month. So, onwards, every year, our fathers would be present during their annual festival when they would worship the deity, and they would stay one month in that old Bungalow. But the two friends had a noble intention, they wanted betterment and welfare of the tribes like civilized society, and accordingly, they requested Government and put some schemes and proposals for the Tribes.

The Government agreed and sent some emissaries to the jungle but the emissaries were not allowed to enter their hamlets by the tribes, and they started attacking the govt. officials with their arrows and spears and wounded some officials severely. The Govt. tried several times to intrude into the jungle for their betterment, tried to bring them in the line of civilized society, but everything went in vain as they would not allow any outsiders. Apart from our fathers, whoever would enter the jungle and cross beyond Bungalow will be attacked by the tribes. I think there should be a coffee break," Bhaskar stopped his speech.

The sound of crockery and spoons was heard from the distant table where both Mihir and Bipin were busy preparing coffee for the family members. The aroma of coffee was coming through the steam from the china kettle. The family members went near the table for their coffee. There was a soft murmuring going on amongst the family members while sipping the coffee, particularly referring to their family history. After 10 minutes, everybody came back to their seats.

Bhaskar said, "Now, I will request my best friend Arnab to continue the story where I left."

Arnab started his speech, "Ultimately, the Government approached our fathers, made them emissaries to contact this rare tribe. Our fathers had a detailed discussion with the Tribes, tried to convince them to bring them to the mainstream of civilized society, but they were not agreeable and were very much adamant to confine themselves in the jungle only. Further, they made their own tribal law that no outsiders will be allowed to enter their territory, only our fathers and their heirs/family members will only be allowed to enter and stay with them. Accordingly, our fathers reported the details to Govt. Later on, the Indian constitution passed a special Act to protect all extinct Tribes of India, and this Tree tribe was protected under special Regulations of the constitution along with Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands under the Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation of1956. As per this regulation, nobody will enter into their areas without the approval of the Government and will be punishable under law. But our fathers were given special approval by Govt. to enter and exit from their area at any time. After some years, during the annual festival of Tribes, our fathers accompanied me and Bhaskar to the jungle and introduced us before all Tribes. From then both of us would attend their annual festival along with our fathers.

These Tribes are also good artists, they could carve a statue out of stone. In the process, both Bhaskar and I learned the tribal dialect and could easily communicate with them. After some years, our fathers died when we both were young. Our fathers were like demi-gods to Tribes, so to remember them and to honor them, they have made two big statues of our fathers which are placed in the entry of their hamlet. After the death of our fathers, we both have continued our family tradition to visit and attend the annual festival of Tribes once in a year, and we both will be staying there for a month with the Tribes."

Archana (Bhaskar's wife) interrupted, "Ohhh, now I understand why you two vanish suddenly for a month together?"

Kaberi (Arnab's wife) said, "Always, these two will make a plea that it was a business-related staying." Both the granddaughters chuckled.

Arpita said, "I wonder, how our two grandmothers didn't get the slightest hint of the Tribes when our grandfathers were visiting jungle regularly throughout so many years."

Arnab smiled at two granddaughters, and continued his speech, "Let me reveal a big secret before our family members. After the death of our fathers, both Bhaskar and I became an ardent worshippers of jungle Deity Masombango as we felt her direct blessings on our family. Today, we both are very rich and prosperous only due to the direct blessings of this jungle Goddess, so to attend the annual festival of Tribes is essential for us when the Goddess is worshipped once in a year by the Tribes. Let me brief you on some more details about the Tribes. The Govt. is much more concerned about the survival of this Tribe because this tribe is rare and Govt. is afraid of their extinction and felt that their protection is required. We both are authorized Govt. Agents to report Govt. all the facts about the Tribe as we both have direct access. Over time, the population of the tribe has reduced to some extent due to natural calamities and some incurable diseases. We both have tried several times for availing medical facilities for them, but they wouldn't accept.

You will be surprised to hear that they are very much expert in herbal medicines, and they will treat themselves from any disease through some wild medicinal herbs which are much effective and could beat our modern medicine and drugs. The most surprising facts are that there are no venomous snakes in and around the jungle or near the inhabitants of the tribes, and secondly, you will not find any mosquitoes, it might be due to a lot of herbal plants in the jungle which might be carrying sanitization and anti-insects' air. As per the latest census reported to Govt. by us, the total population of the tribes is 600 in numbers. With the aid of Govt., we have repaired and renovated the abandoned Bungalow where we both friends usually stay, and now it has turned into a beautiful bungalow the tribes would take care of housekeeping, they have planted beautiful flowers and fruits in and around the Bungalow. Another peculiar thing is that the tribes are cultivating a special type of rice which when cooked will emit an essence, a fragrance spread to some meters distance, and it will taste sweet. Our fathers revealed to us that the tribes would cultivate this aromatic rice through the permeation process of wild herbal juices mixed in grains before cultivation.

Over the years, there have been slight changes. The Tribes felt the need for metal equipment, matchbox, kerosine, lantern, scissors and razors for cutting hairs and shaving, and other essential items which they needed in their day-to-day life. So, to fulfill their needs, we arranged a barter system after discussion with Govt. officials. Once in a month, the traders will gather outside of the jungle, just near the forest check gate. The tribes will come with their sweet rice, honey, fruits, berries, and other jungle products in exchange for their essential needs from the traders, and the Govt. forest officials would help to facilitate this process. Their sweet rice is in such a demand that it is very costly, and export quality of rice. You can have a taste of it in five-star hotels only where rich people demand it more."

He stopped for a moment, then continued his speech, "Let me tell you more details about these tribes and how to reach them. When you go deep into the jungle, first you will come across the Bungalow which is situated in an open high place with a slope downwards from where the height of Bungalow would be approximately 60 feet in height. You cannot see anything below, only deep and dense forest spread over everywhere. There is a walkable path from Bungalow which will lead you to this dense forest, and after walking 10 minutes in the forest you will reach a place where the statues of our fathers are placed, and which is the entry point from where you can see in yours left and right side two hamlets consisting of a lot of tiny huts. It is just like a 'V-shaped. There is one Village head of these two hamlets, who is the law enforcing authority of them, his words are the law. Usually, the village head is chosen by all the tribes of these two hamlets once in ten years amongst them depending upon the caliber, intellectual level, expertise in archery and hunting, and leadership quality of a tribe. If they are satisfied with the present leader then he could continue for another 10 years. This democratic process was initiated by our fathers.

The members of the tribe are united by kinship bonds. Many tribes obtained their livelihood from agriculture. Others were hunter-gatherers or herders. Most often they combined these activities to make full use of the natural resources of the area in which they lived. In various ways, the tribes retained their freedom and preserved their separate culture. It is just like a utopian state." Arnab stopped, then asked, "Can anyone tell me what do you mean by 'Utopian'?"

Dipankar, son of Bhaskar replied, "Uncle, it is an imaginary and indefinitely remote place. a place of ideal perfection especially in-laws, government, and social conditions."

Arnab continued, "Exactly, you are right Dipankar. This tribal society is completely far from the madding crowd and lawless city like ours, there is no crime, Ra*e, mur*er, and completely peaceful society, where you can roam freely day or at night, no protection for women is required. Whenever we both friends go and stay there, we derive such mental peace which I can't express unless you feel it. The radius of this entire protected area is 150 km, full of dense forest, big mountains with 4 nos of beautiful waterfalls. The entire area is full of fauna and flora. In our fathers' time, this area was full of wild animals like Royal Bengal tigers and leopards, but it is pity that now those wild animals are completely extinct except Indian wolves and Hyenas who live in the core of the jungle. These wolves and hyenas never come out from the core of the jungle towards the hamlets of tribes rather they are afraid of human beings. The jungle has plenty of spotted deer and sambar (a dark brown woodland deer with branched antlers) monkeys, rabbits, and other mammals.

You can see a lot of valuable trees like Teak, Saal, etc. and apart from these, you can also find tangy Imli (Tamarinds) trees with a lot of mangroves, Palm trees, and also coconut trees in the forest. The entire area is enriched with various sweet fruits and berries like Mango, coconut, pineapple, Papaya, Targola (It is the fruit of an indigenous variety of palm trees), custard apple, Jackfruit, Banana, Bel (Wood apple), Orange, Lemon, Lime, and a lot of other countless fruits which is difficult for me to describe in details. Apart from this, you can find various berries like, Jamun (blackberry), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), delicious Jhar-Beri, Karvanda (Carissa carandas), Star Fruit (Carambola), Indian Raspberry which is aptly known as Rasbhari, serviceberries, lingonberry, elderberries, blueberries, and Wild plum, etc."

"Ohhh...stop Grand paa, my mouth is watering," cried Bipasha.

Arnab smiled and continued his speech, "Now let me explain about their social life. These tribe people are strongly built with height up to 6 feet, black like African negro but the difference is that they have long hairs unlike negroes who have curly hairs. Previously they were naked, but our fathers trained them in weaver arts, and now they wear Coarse clothes in multi-coloured, a female doesn't wear a blouse rather she would wrap her entire body in single clothing. But on the occasion of their annual festival when they worship their Deity, the ordinary tribes would wear deer skins in their loins, and the village chief would wear either wolf skin or hyena skin. Unlike us, they would not use soap or shampoo at the time of bathing rather they would use some special kind of smooth soil on their bodies and hair which would make their bodies clean, and their hair smooth, so there is no need for combing their hair.

"They would brush their teeth with neem twigs which is a natural antibiotic in nature along with Triphala tooth powder, the Powder consists of Amalaki (Phyllanthus Emblica), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) which prevent all kinds of mouth ulcers. When their elder person gets too old, they would follow their old traditions, they would build a treehouse in jungle, just near their hamlets and the elder person would live there alone, his kiths and kins would provide him food all times there. In a particular place, you would find a small jungle of teak trees on mounds and a heap of soil that looked different from other jungles of trees. That is the graveyard or burial ground of tribes. After the death of a tribe, his family members would bury him on the ground with a huge mound of soil above. They would plant a sapling of teak on the mound of soil, and water it regularly till such time when it becomes a big teak tree. They believe that the spirit of the dead man will live in that tree forever."

"Really, it is interesting in my research," Debika said.

Arnab resumed his speech, "All of our family members are grownups, so I don't hesitate to throw some lights upon their obscure social life. Polygyny, wherein a man has multiple simultaneous wives is not allowed rather Polyandry, wherein a woman has multiple simultaneous husbands is allowed, I mean, one woman could have multiple husbands simultaneously but it is not regular practice and it happens in rare cases. The tribes usually prefer one wife and one husband throughout their life. I think our dear daughter Debika, who is a professor in Anthropology would understand the concept better than others. Here, our fathers put some restrictions on their marriage, our fathers forbade them for a marriage between two direct bloodlines, for example, marriage between paternal cousins.

Marriage will be performed before the deity by exchanging garlands between bride and groom, and the marriage ceremony will continue for a week with feast and pleasure. They would prepare some intoxicating drinks made from palm trees as well as from decomposed rice mixed with accumulated juices of some wild herbs which are stronger than wines like Rum and whisky. After being intoxicated, all of them would start dancing with the tune of the beating of drums. Ra*e is strictly prohibited and punishment is death. Our fathers had seen only one case wherein the culprit was bound in a wooden plank before the public, and the archers of the tribe started shooting arrows on his body, and the culprit died within few minutes. There are no such cases to date as the tribe regards it as sin and heinous crime. That's why I consider women are very much safe in the tribe."

Arnab asked for a glass of water. Then he took a sip of water and continued his speech, "Every male and female could have a physical relationship with anybody willingly, but there is a restriction, if they are caught red-handed, the village chief will impose a penalty by means of some quantity of rice levied on the lovers. After that, the lovers are bound to marry each other irrespective of the fact that one of them is married or unmarried. If unmarried then it is normal, and if married then he or she has to leave his wife and her husband entering into a new nuptial. It means as long as you are not caught you can continue the relationship with anybody. The pregnancy of a woman is always welcome in the tribe which is considered sacred, no question is asked about the fatherhood of a baby if the woman is married. If the woman is unmarried and pregnant then the person who is responsible for the pregnancy has to marry the woman. The tribes believe in an arranged marriage. When a girl reaches her puberty stage then she is eligible for marriage.

Similarly, a boy when he grows a beard, he is eligible for marriage. But the most peculiar and obscure thing is that after the marriage of a new bride and groom, the bride has to spend one month each with the elders of the family. The elder persons of a family refer to the groom's father and grandfather whoever is alive. After that, only the newlywed bride is allowed to stay with her husband. If out of a physical relationship with elders during this one-month stay, the bride gets pregnant then it is considered sacred for the whole family, and the future baby would be considered the first heir of the family. But there are further restrictions, after spending one month with the new bride, the elders would never touch the bride of the family ever again which is a social taboo and considered as a sin."

It was twilight. The evening was just approaching and it was not dark, still, there was daylight. Arnab finished his speech and looked towards his friend Bhaskar who was sitting beside him.

Bhaskar got the hints and said, "We all should have a break for evening snacks and another round of coffee. But before that, I wish to know about the college vacation of our two granddaughters, as they had informed me earlier that this month, they were going to have a long vacation."

Bipasha replied, "This week is our last week in college. Again, our classes will be resumed after a gap of two months. So, we have a vacation of two months continuously."

"What's the probable cause of such a long duration of vacation?" asked Bhaskar.

"Grandpaa, the final examination of the university for last year students are going to be started from coming week and it will continue for two months. Since we are 1st-year students, and our course is almost finished, the college authority feels that they shouldn't continue our classes during this examination period. Further, they have assigned us some field projects, the reports of which we have to submit after 2 months," explained Arpita.

"Well, then let me inform all of our family members about a program we two friends have devised two months before. Two months before, we two friends were discussing our visit to tribes to attend their annual festival, the tradition which we both have been carrying forward for the years after our late fathers. Their annual festival is scheduled to start this month, after 10 days from today. During the discussion, all of a sudden, our two daughters Deboshree and Debika stepped in as they wanted some advice from us. Debika is a professor of Anthropology, and she wanted to do something unique research in her field. Similarly, Deboshree is a researcher cum scientist in National Rice Research Centre, and she also wanted to do something new for her research. Then we both friends suggested Debiika research on this Tree Tribe, and Deboshree researches the sweet aromatic rice produced by these tribes. Both our daughters happily agreed.

Their pilot projects are already approved by their authorities. So, we planned to take them along with us during our visit to tribes for attending the annual festival and stay there for two months instead of one month so that our daughters could complete their Research works. In the meantime, our two granddaughters had informed us that they were going to have a long vacation after two months. Keeping in view of all factors, we had a second thought, why not taking all of our family members with us to the jungle to attend their annual festival? For some years, the tribes are insisting to see our family members for an introduction with them. We two friends agreed that this is the right moment and opportunity to introduce our family members before tribes, and planned accordingly. Just before one month, Govt. had required certain data about tribes, and we had to visit the jungle and stayed there for a week.

During our stay, we obtained all the necessary things including the new mattress, new bedsheets for eight rooms of the Bungalow, all necessary grocery items along 4 nos of new bicycles. All things are stored in Bungalow under the care of tribes. We also informed them that our family members were coming to join their annual festival. Everything is ready, only we have not fixed the date of the journey. It is only an overnight journey from here to reach the place. We have arranged a big vehicle which will be driven by Bipin. Mihir will be our cook in Bungalow. Both Bipin and Mihir are included in this trip. All of us will be away from our home for two months on a jungle safari, with tribes. What do you say all?" asked Bhaskar.

Everyone cheered and consented. They could feel the thrilling experience to be in the jungle from now. Debashish, son of Arnab raised a question, "Uncle, two problems are coming to my mind. One is electricity and the second is water including drinking water. How can we spend 2 months without light and drinking water?"

"Let us first discuss water. There is a mountain just backside of the Bungalow. For the ages, during the rainy season, water will fall from the top of the mountain and will be stored in a place surrounded by big rocks. In times, it has become a natural embankment of water and turned into a big natural water pond. Since the water is stored on a rocky surface, the water is very cool and clear like glass. The water remains always full throughout the year, when again in next season it gets rainwater from the mountain, the excess water overflows towards downwards by means of a small stream running towards River Kangsabati near the hamlets. Although the tribes are living near the bank of River Kangsabati, this natural stream from the water embankment would serve them for additional water resources. So, due to this natural cycle of water, you will find freshwater throughout the year in that natural water pond which is situated just 100 meters away from the Bungalow on the backside.

As our fathers were staying at that Bungalow to observe the tribes and reporting to Govt., they persuaded Govt. for a water pipe connection from pond to underground water tank situated in the backside of the Bungalow. After connection of water pipes, the water reached the underground tank of Bungalow through the swinging Basket method. In this method, water is lifted through a leather basket made by tribes from the pond. The basket is slung by ropes on both sides. Two Tribes would hold the ropes at ends and dip the basket in the channel water of the pond. Then swing is given to the basket so that the basket full of water tilts over the watercourse and discharges water near the hole of pipe. The water from the pond is transferred near the hole of the pipe just above and from there onwards till the water reaches the underground tank of Bungalow. Two tribes will be engaged to do this work till the underground tank is filled up with water."

Arnab stopped for a moment then glanced towards all family members, resumed his speech, "After the death of our fathers, we two have updated and changed everything in the Bungalow. We have made another water tank on the roof of the bungalow. We have arranged to install electrification in every room along with a water pipe connection to the kitchen and two bathrooms from the top water tank. Now, we have a diesel water pump to lift water from the underground tank to the top tank. Similarly, we have a powerful diesel generator to supply electricity to the entire Bungalow. Then we have also adopted another method to purify the water. We will put chlorine powder in the underground tank, and for drinking water, we will put special WHO prescribed Aqutabs which are effervescent tablets, and kill micro-organisms in water to prevent cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and other water-borne diseases. So, I think everybody is satisfied with our arrangements.

Let us fix the day of our journey after three days on Saturday evening. Now, we will have a break for evening snacks and another round of coffee. We all will assemble here after one hour for further discussion. In the meantime, I would advise all our family members to present before us their plans and their activities during these two months in the jungle," Bhaskar concluded his speech.

Again, all the members made a queue for their evening snacks and coffee. Now, they were in different groups and involved in serious discussions about their trips to the jungle and encountering tribes. Everybody was thrilled. The two granddaughters were sitting in a corner and sipping their coffees. Ramu's semen was now dried up in the cleft of Bipasha's ass, but still, she could feel its presence there.

Bipasha said, "Dear Arpita, Today is our adventure day. First, we had a little adventure with Ramu, secondly, we heard the adventure story of our forefathers. Now, I feel more adventurous and thrilled to be in the jungle, and with tribes."

Arpita smiled, and said, "My dear, don't forget that we both have been assigned field study tasks by the college and presenting reports which we have to do in the jungle. Of course, your task is different than me and we cannot help each other," she teased further, "I feel sad that you will be missing the big cock of Ramu."

Bipasha feigned to be angry, and said, "Don't tell me that Arpita, as if you have not enjoyed his cock!"

Their two grandmothers, the elderly ladies, Kaberi and Archana were sitting few yards away from them and were discussing. These two elderly ladies were very naughty. Kaberi said, "What we two elderly ladies would do in the jungle? We are no longer young. Do you remember last time when we both visited the jungle with our men?"

"Yes, I remember. At that time, we were young couples, and we all visited Kanha National park, that deep jungle of Tiger sanctuary. We all spent a week in the guest house of that jungle for our honeymoon. My husband was not sparing me, and all the time he was insisting for sex," said Archana smilingly.

Kaberi smiled and said, "Same with me. At that time, my husband was having sex with me 2-3 times a day. Those are the golden days when we both have enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. I don't remember when the last time I slept with my husband, maybe 5 or 6 years before. Now, my old man has abstained himself from sex, he is past 60 years. Further, we have a son, a daughter, daughter-in-law, and young granddaughter of 18 years."

"The same thing with me also. Further, our two oldmen are busy with tribal affairs, and they don't have time for us. We both are 56 years old, don't we? Last night, I watched on TV an American woman of 56 years old who was pregnant and delivered a healthy baby because she had not reached her menopausal stage. I felt a sensation inside my body as I have also not reached the menopausal stage. For a second, I imagined what types of embarrassment I would have faced before my son, daughter, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter if now I were pregnant," Kanchan said.

"By the way, dear, I have also not reached my menopausal stage like you. Now, forget about sex and pregnancy as our oldmen have abstained themselves from sex quite a long time before. Now, we should concentrate by studying religious books, praying before God, and enjoying the growth of our two granddaughters," said Kaberi.

"You are right, Kaberi," replied Kanchan.
